I just came back from the ride to the Portola Expedition site and wanted to write a little about this morning. I woke up at 4:00 AM and saw the conditions were very good for a sunrise. The sun wouldn’t rise until 6:55 AM so I played a little Warcraft, did the dishes and then got ready for the ride.
The best days for me are ones where I get a lot done in the early morning before everyone wakes up and I’m able to exercise. Then my battery is charged and I’m up for anything. The ride to the top of the mountain isn’t very fun, especially in the pitch dark while using my headlamp. But this morning Venus, Mars and Jupiter were all in a line and it was beautiful. I thought how amazing it is that NASA has robots on that little red dot so many millions of miles away and can control it just as a child does a remote controlled car.
I made it to the top and was a bit sweaty but the wind was blowing and I soon took some shelter behind a large bush. I arrived in time to see all the lights of down around the Bay and the sun was just making it’s influence known. About half an hour later – mostly crouching behind the bush – I realized the sun was rising way to the south and behind a large tree. I got on my bike and rode to a better vantage point just after the sun started peaking from behind the mountains in the distance.
I didn’t spend much time up there after that and came back home to make breakfast. It looks like the wife really needs some alone time and since I’ve gotten my exercise I’m up for anything and will take the kids somewhere fun. As I type these words one of them is crying so I better get a move on.
